The Director of Procurement for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Olawole Chris Jimba, emphasized to corps members that their service is a critical part of reinforcing Nigeria’s unity and indivisibility. He shared this message with the 2024 Batch ‘C’ (Stream 1) corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.
Jimba highlighted the divisive impact of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) and underscored that the NYSC, established in 1973, has played a pivotal role in restoring unity and fostering national cohesion. He praised the resilience of corps members, noting that their contributions have been vital to the country’s progress and development.
In his address, Jimba encouraged the corps members to view their deployment as an opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s growth, just as previous corps members have done. He expressed confidence that the current batch would exceed expectations and make a lasting impact throughout their service year.
Jimba further acknowledged the invaluable role of the NYSC’s leadership, including the Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, and others, who have consistently assured the corps members of their safety and well-being during their service.
He urged the corps members to leave a positive legacy in their host communities and at their primary places of assignment by impacting those who need their assistance. He also encouraged them to take full advantage of the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, which equips youths with valuable skills for self-reliance and success in the competitive job market.
Highlighting the challenges of securing paid employment, Jimba advised corps members to aim to become employers of labor and to embrace entrepreneurship. He stressed that while paid jobs may be harder to come by, the opportunities in self-employment could lead to greater recognition and success.
In closing, Jimba, who has served in various capacities throughout his NYSC career, urged corps members to maintain discipline, show respect for others, and serve with kindness. He reminded them that their selfless service would be rewarded by God.
On the matter of security, Jimba advised corps members to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate security personnel. He assured them that their safety would remain a top priority, and the NYSC stakeholders would respond swiftly to any concerns.
The Ondo State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Kuburat Omowumi Bakare, welcomed the corps members, praising them for their discipline and commitment. She also thanked the NYSC management and the Director of Procurement for their efforts in ensuring the corps members received quality kits and a well-managed camp experience.
Jimba expressed his gratitude to the camp officials and various teams, including the Quarter Guard, Cultural Troupe, and others, for their exceptional performances during the visit.
