The police have arrested the suspected killers of Alaba Abe, the campaign director for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s reelection in Ondo State. Abe, who was overseeing Aiyedatiwa’s campaign in Akoko-South Local Government Area, was kidnapped and murdered by gunmen at his home in Supare Akoko in April.
As reported by PUNCH, the arrest was made by the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ondo State Police Command.
According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, the suspects were identified as Mohammed Sheu and Abubakar Umar.
Odunlami explained that on November 14, 2024, police officers intercepted a Hiace bus at Ikare Junction. During a search of the vehicle, 21-year-old Sheu was questioned, leading to the discovery of a voice note on his phone. In the voice note, Sheu admitted to being financially strapped and expressed interest in taking up a kidnapping job for money.
After further questioning, Sheu allegedly confessed to being involved in several crimes, including kidnappings and robberies across regions like Kogi, Niger, Akoko, Ifon, Ipele, and Owo. This confession led to the arrest of 24-year-old Abubakar Umar, who also reportedly admitted to being part of the gang.
Odunlami stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional members of the criminal group.
