Agencies, March 7, 2025 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched an investigation into the death of a 20-year-old Nepalese student at KIIT University, with a team visiting the campus on Thursday. The tragic incident, which occurred on February 16, has garnered significant international attention, particularly after Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, personally intervened in the matter.
A member of the NHRC probe team, Priyank Kanoongo, confirmed that the investigation would cover two key issues: the death of the student, Prakriti Lamsal, and the alleged harassment of Nepalese students, including reports of physical abuse. The team interviewed both students and university officials to gather information. They are expected to submit their report by March 10.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage, particularly in Nepal, where a delegation quickly traveled to Odisha to meet with local officials and students. The delegation demanded strict action against the individuals responsible for making derogatory remarks about Nepal and allegedly assaulting Nepali students during the unrest that followed Lamsal’s death.
As of now, around 900 Nepalese students have returned to KIIT’s campus, while 42 others have left the state for internships. In response to the incident, the Odisha higher education department has established a dedicated International Student Facilitation Cell to better assist and support international students studying in the state.
The inquiry by the NHRC and the growing diplomatic attention indicate the seriousness of the incident, which has deeply affected both the student community and the broader Nepalese diaspora.
