On Monday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly passed a vote of confidence in Mojisola Meranda as the Assembly’s speaker.
Despite growing tensions and heightened security, Meranda presided over the plenary session, with lawmakers voicing their support for her leadership.
Protests and Clashes Amid Rising Tensions
The Assembly has been embroiled in a dispute since the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker on January 13. As rumors swirl about Obasa’s potential reinstatement, legislative workers have staged protests against any such move, leading to clashes with Department of State Services (DSS) officials.
DSS Seals Off Offices, Confrontation Ensues
On Monday morning, DSS operatives, who had arrived with armed officers, sealed off the offices of Meranda, the Deputy Speaker, and the Clerk. This prompted commotion as legislative workers and DSS agents confronted each other. Despite the tense atmosphere, Meranda’s arrival at the Assembly was met with chants of “Meranda we want” from workers, showing solidarity with the first female speaker.
Vote of Confidence Passed in Plenary
Inside the chamber, Meranda and around 32 lawmakers were present. A motion was proposed and supported by all attendees, passing a vote of confidence in Meranda.
DSS Clarifies Role in Assembly Security
Meanwhile, the DSS clarified its involvement, stating that it had not stormed the Assembly uninvited. Instead, it had been asked to provide additional security following concerns over the possible return of the impeached Speaker, Obasa. According to a letter from the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, the DSS was requested to enhance security starting February 16, due to fears that Obasa’s return could pose a security threat.
New Commissioner of Police Appointed Amid Rising Tensions
In related news, the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced the appointment of Olohundare Moshood Jimoh as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos State. This change in leadership comes as tensions continue to rise around the Assembly and its ongoing political crisis. Jimoh, previously Commissioner of Police at the Eastern Ports, replaces Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale.
