The Delta State Government has clarified that Olu-Odu remains an inegral part of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and has not been granted autonomy, dismissing reports suggesting otherwise.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the government described the claims of Olu-Odu’s autonomy as inaccurate and misleading.
“The Delta State Government wishes to set the record straight regarding the Olu-Odu community in Aniocha South Local Government Area. Contrary to circulating reports, the community has not been granted autonomous status,” Aniagwu stated.
He explained that while a request for Olu-Odu’s autonomy was initially included on the agenda for the first 2025 State Executive Council meeting, Governor Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori ordered its removal before any discussions took place.
“We urge the public to disregard any false reports suggesting otherwise,” the statement concluded.
Controversy Over Leadership Claims
The dispute over Olu-Odu’s status intensified following attempts by Mr. Alexander Ifechukwude to proclaim himself the traditional ruler of the community. Official sources revealed that Ifechukwude had previously faced legal action based on recommendations from the Delta State Ministry of Justice. However, the case was dropped after he gave a written commitment to cease his activities.
Despite this, reports indicate that Ifechukwude allegedly attempted to strengthen his claim by offering over 1,500 hectares of land in Olu-Odu to top government officials, signing documents in which he referred to himself as “His Highness.” This move reportedly triggered tensions within the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, leading to the displacement of local farmers and escalating the crisis.
Community Applauds Government’s Intervention
The people of Ogwashi-Uku have welcomed the government’s clarification, reaffirming the kingdom’s unity and rejecting any attempt to alter its territorial structure.
Community leaders expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for swiftly addressing the issue and preventing the spread of misinformation. They also commended His Royal Majesty, Obi Dr. Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, for his commitment to preserving the integrity of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.
With the government taking a firm stance, any further attempts to challenge the kingdom’s unity are expected to face legal and administrative action.
