The Imo State Police Command has successfully neutralized two suspected kidnappers and rescued four victims during an operation in the Umuokanne community, Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state.
Henry Okoye, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident on Saturday while addressing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Owerri, where the bodies of the suspects were displayed.
According to Okoye, the operation began after a distress call was received at around 12:00 PM on January 4, 2025, reporting the abduction of three women and one man. Acting swiftly, operatives from the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit traced the kidnappers to their hideout.
“Upon arrival at the criminals’ location, our operatives engaged the suspects in a gunfight. Two of the kidnappers were neutralized, and four victims were successfully rescued,” Okoye stated.
The rescued victims were identified as Carolyn Didia (42), Ego Odu (48), Apollonia Ezekwe (40), and Godwin Ezekwe (37). While two of the victims sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation, they were promptly taken to Oforola Health Centre, where they are reportedly stable and recovering.
The police recovered an AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and a magazine from the criminals during the operation.
The Imo State Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to ensuring safety and security across the state. Efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the criminal syndicate who escaped during the operation.
The command also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to aid the police in maintaining law and order.
“This operation underscores our dedication to combating crime and protecting lives in Imo State,” the PPRO emphasized.
