Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the recent military-style honours accorded to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a breach of military traditions.
He also called for a thorough investigation into the incident, which he labeled a desecration of the nation’s revered regimented customs.
In a statement released by his media office and signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku expressed dismay over a viral video showing armed individuals in a formal military parade for the President’s son.
He stated that the act was an unacceptable anomaly, as it is unheard of for the Armed Forces to organize such honours for a non-public figure.
Atiku questioned the legitimacy of the group behind the procession, known as the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” which he said is not recognized within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He criticized the misuse of the title “Cadet,” traditionally reserved for formally trained military personnel, by civilians in what he described as a mockery of military traditions.
He also raised alarm over the illegal use of firearms by the group, noting that such actions are especially troubling in a country already grappling with the proliferation of illegal arms.
Atiku described the incident as a reckless display that undermines national security and called on security agencies to investigate the origin and legality of the firearms used during the parade.
Emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Atiku urged the authorities to ensure that those involved, including the President’s son if necessary, are held accountable under the law. He warned that failure to address such breaches could set a dangerous precedent and erode public confidence in the nation’s institutions.
