A 28-year-old pony ride operator from Hapatnar village in Anantnag, Adil was the sole breadwinner for his family, guiding tourists through the rugged terrains of Baisaran meadow. When terrorists opened fire indiscriminately on unsuspecting tourists, Adil didn’t hesitate. Instead of fleeing to safety, he ran toward the gunfire, hoping to shield the very tourists he had been guiding that day. Witnesses said Adil confronted one of the assailants, attempting to wrestle a rifle from him in an effort to protect those around him. Tragically, his bravery cost him his life. Shot at point-blank range by another attacker, Adil succumbed to his injuries after being hit with two bullets to the neck and one in the shoulder.
“My brother tried to stop them,” recalled Syed Naushad, Adil’s younger brother. “He didn’t think twice about his own safety. He was always ready to help others, even at the risk of his own life.”
In the aftermath of the attack, as the family and community tried to grasp the enormity of their loss, Adil’s actions have been widely recognized. Later, we found out he had been shot. He was kind, the only provider for our family, including his wife, and five siblings,, and now he’s gone,” he said, struggling to contain his grief.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah paid his respects at Adil’s funeral, where he praised the young man’s bravery. “I condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms. A local, a poor man, has died in this senseless violence. Adil was brave; he died trying to save the tourists. His extraordinary courage will never be forgotten,” Abdullah said, addressing the media after attending the funeral in Hapatnar on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister also assured the family of full government support, including an ex gratia payment of Rs. 10 lakh for the deceased’s family and promised ongoing assistance as they navigate this devastating loss.
