The Lagos State Government has announced plans to complete the 68-kilometer Green Line rail project in its entirety, rather than in phases.
The project, which will stretch from Marina to the Lekki Free Zone, aims to enhance public transportation, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and improve overall mobility in the state.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has shared updates on the project’s progress, including the unveiling of the full route alignment.
According to the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, the government intends to complete the entire project rather than in phases.
The government’s approach to the Green Line rail project differs from previous metro projects, such as the Blue Line and Red Line, which were delivered in phases. In contrast, the Green Line will be completed in its entirety before commercial operations begin.
The LAMATA has also outlined the key components of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process for the project. Although the 68km alignment of the Green Line has been revealed, specific route details have not been made public.
The project is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s transportation system, providing efficient and sustainable solutions for residents. An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Resettlement Policy Framework are currently underway to mitigate potential effects on the environment and local communities.
Moreover, the Lagos State Government has partnered with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to develop the project, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed for the project’s execution. The government is committed to completing the project, which will contribute to creating a more sustainable, efficient, and livable urban environment for Lagos’ growing population.
Property owners along the proposed corridor have been advised to regularize their building approval documents to avoid potential consequences.
This move aims to ensure that all necessary documentation is in order, mitigating potential issues that may arise during the project’s execution.
