Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 26, 2025, Kolkata : In a heartfelt display of compassion, Constable Sukumar Upadhyay of the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate has once again extended his help to a homeless individual. Sixty-year-old Bimal Biswas, who had been struggling to survive on the streets of Chinsurah, has now found shelter at Nabajiban, a municipal facility for the homeless, thanks to the officer’s efforts. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the elderly man embraced the officer, tears streaming down his face—an emotional moment that also brought tears to Upadhyay’s eyes.
A former driver, Biswas had been living in a rented house in Hemanta Basu Colony but was forced into homelessness due to financial difficulties and his inability to work. For months, he took refuge outside a furniture shop in Chinsurah Chowk Bazar, where shopkeeper Laxminarayan Ghosh allowed him to sleep on the veranda with a blanket. However, he remained vulnerable, and after being attacked by an unidentified youth, he sought shelter at the local Kali temple.
Constable Upadhyay, known for his dedication to helping the homeless and those abandoned by their families, noticed Biswas lying outside the temple. Taking the initiative, he spoke to the elderly man and learned about his struggles. He then approached Chinsurah Municipality, secured permission, and personally arranged for Biswas to be accommodated at Nabajiban.
Upadhyay has a history of assisting those in need, from reuniting abandoned individuals with their families to supporting students in difficult circumstances. Reflecting on his commitment, he stated that helping others is a responsibility everyone should take on. “Even small efforts can make a big difference in people’s lives,” he said.
