The Nigeria Police Force is reportedly in a difficult position following the unexpected withdrawal of a petition by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan regarding an alleged infiltration of the National Assembly by Russia’s KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), the former Soviet security agency.
Investigations reveal that the police had invited Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West, for questioning after Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Senator representing Kogi Central, filed a petition against him on March 5, 2025.
In the petition, Akpoti-Uduaghan urged the police to investigate Karimi’s claim that KGB operatives had infiltrated the National Assembly, warning that such an occurrence posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy. She specifically referenced a report titled “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy”, which Karimi allegedly shared on the official WhatsApp group of the 10th Senate on February 23, 2025.
Describing the matter as a national security concern, the suspended senator had insisted that the claim should not be taken lightly.
Following the petition, Senator Karimi honored the police invitation on Monday and provided his statement. Sources at the Force Headquarters described the session as “positive, with useful disclosures,” adding that the senator admitted to sharing the post.
However, police authorities were reportedly taken aback when Akpoti-Uduaghan distanced herself from the petition and refused to honor their invitation for questioning.
“We reached out to her after our session with Senator Karimi because we needed to hear from her as well. But she has repeatedly ignored our invitation,” a police source revealed.
The source expressed concern over her sudden withdrawal, calling it suspicious.
“She initially insisted that the issue was of national importance, so it is disturbing that she has now abandoned it. Her excuse was that she is outside the country, yet a video of her visiting her constituency recently went viral. This contradiction raises questions.”
The police official further stated that while the force remains neutral in the ongoing Senate controversies, using security agencies for political battles would be unacceptable.
When asked about the next steps, the source suggested that senior officials would decide how to handle the petition, which he dismissed as frivolous.
