A jailbreak occurred at the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, in the early hours of Monday, leading to the escape of 12 inmates.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described the situation as unfortunate but commended the swift response of security agencies. He assured residents that the government is taking decisive measures to prevent a recurrence.
Fanwo emphasized the government’s commitment to working with security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape.
“The claim that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns,” he noted. “A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the exact circumstances of the jailbreak, track down the escapees, and identify any internal collaborators.”
Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to work closely with the Federal Correctional Center and other security agencies to strengthen security measures and prevent future incidents.
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies by providing necessary logistics and resources to enhance their operations.
While the investigation continues, authorities have assured residents that the situation is under control.
“There is no need for panic. Citizens should go about their daily activities as security remains our top priority,” Fanwo added.
