The oil and gas sector remains a crucial pillar of Nigeria’s industrialization and economic growth, with local content development playing a key role in its sustainability.
This was the focal point at a two-day conference and exhibition organized by Vanguard Media Limited in partnership with the Delta State Government and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).
The event, themed “Local Content, Global Impact: Energizing Nigerian Expertise in the Oil and Gas Industry for National Growth,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening indigenous participation.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, represented by the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. Peter Okagbare Uviejitobor, emphasized the importance of leveraging local expertise to drive sustainable growth and enhance community relations.
He highlighted Delta State’s commitment to indigenous participation through the establishment of the Department of Local Content and the Delta State Local Content Agency within the Ministry of Oil and Gas.
Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, Executive Secretary of NCDMB, represented by Barr. Olugbenga Shebo, reiterated that local content is a tool for economic advancement rather than a trade barrier.
He stressed the need for partnerships between indigenous companies and international Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to promote technology transfer and job creation.
Prince Anthony Okoh, President of the Delta Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (DACCIMA), underscored the need to maximize Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.
Represented by Engr. Anthony Okoh of WACCIMA, he outlined key areas for improvement, including skill development, innovation, and stronger engagement with host communities.
Prince Maikpobi Okareme, Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), called for the full implementation of the Local Content Act to ensure equitable benefits for oil-producing communities.
He urged NCDMB to establish regional offices in Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, advocating for fair access to opportunities.
The conference also featured remarks from Vanguard Media Group’s Founder and Publisher, Uncle Sam Amuka, represented by Deputy Editor Adekunle Adekoya, who urged Nigeria to reduce dependence on foreign firms for oil and gas projects.
Prof. Jasper Ikpesu of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), delivering the keynote address, explored strategies to enhance local participation in the sector.
The event concluded with a robust discussion on policies and frameworks that can strengthen Nigeria’s local content initiatives.
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to advancing indigenous expertise, positioning the nation’s oil and gas industry for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
