President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State, of his administration’s unwavering support in driving energy education, research, and innovation.
He emphasized that the federal government remains committed to equipping FUPRE to fulfill its mandate as Nigeria’s foremost institution in the energy sector.
Represented by Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Munakurogha Adigio, Vice-Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, President Tinubu made this known at FUPRE’s 4th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
He acknowledged the university’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s economic growth, given the country’s vast oil and gas resources.
Highlighting his administration’s efforts in education, the president referenced key initiatives such as the Student Loan Scheme, the National Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Program, and expanded scholarship opportunities, all designed to empower Nigerian youth for economic transformation.
President Tinubu urged stakeholders within and beyond Nigeria to partner with the federal government in positioning FUPRE as a global hub for energy research and technological advancement.
He stated that the government remains committed to supporting the university in realizing its full potential but emphasized that achieving this vision requires collective effort from industry leaders, stakeholders, and Nigerians in the diaspora.
He charged the university’s leadership with the responsibility of leading research into sustainable energy solutions, stressing the need for indigenous professionals to take the lead in shaping Nigeria’s energy future.
Addressing the graduating students, the president underscored their critical role in driving technological advancements and economic development, noting that both Nigeria and Africa look up to them as change-makers in society.
He emphasized that as engineers, scientists, and innovators, they are expected to create industries, develop sustainable energy solutions, and tackle emerging global challenges.
He further encouraged them to embrace new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence to remain competitive in the evolving job market.
His Royal Majesty, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, Torungbuwa II, Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, who serves as FUPRE’s Chancellor, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his consistent support and prayed for wisdom and strength for the president in leading Nigeria to greater heights.
Similarly, the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Bello Gachi Issa, highlighted strides made in enhancing academic and administrative structures under the current leadership.
He affirmed that the university is making significant progress in positioning itself as Africa’s leading petroleum education institution and a world-class research hub in the oil and gas sector.
In his address, FUPRE’s Vice-Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Akpofure Rim Rukeh, welcomed dignitaries, including Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and representatives from the Minister of Education, TETFUND, and the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He noted that the convocation marked the conclusion of his five-year tenure, during which the university witnessed substantial growth.
He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the university community and announced that 3,369 students graduated, comprising 2,683 undergraduates and 686 postgraduates, with 51 students earning First-Class Honours.
He also celebrated the rising number of female graduates, reaffirming FUPRE’s commitment to gender inclusivity.
Prof. Rukeh further disclosed that under his leadership, FUPRE secured approvals for new colleges and programs from the NUC, expanding academic opportunities for students.
He noted that the newly introduced programs align with industry demands and global trends, preparing students for leadership roles in key sectors such as maritime studies, computing, and petroleum administration.
He emphasized that these additions reflect the university’s commitment to academic excellence and industry relevance.
As part of the convocation ceremony, FUPRE conferred Honorary Doctor of Engineering degrees on notable individuals who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s energy and business sectors.
Among them were Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of Dangote Group; Chief Dr. Leemon Ikpea, Chairman and CEO of Lee Engineering Group; Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, Commission Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission; Engr. Femi Bajomo, Managing Director of First Hydrocarbon Nigeria; Dr. Seinye Lulu-Briggs, Chairman and CEO of Moni Pulo Limited; and Sholaye Jeremi, a visionary leader in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
These individuals were recognized for their contributions to the advancement of Nigeria’s energy industry and economic development.
The 4th Convocation Ceremony marked a significant milestone in FUPRE’s journey toward becoming a globally recognized institution.
With continued government support, industry partnerships, and academic excellence, the university is poised to drive innovation in energy education and sustainable research, positioning itself as a leader in Nigeria’s energy transition and technological advancement.
