Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has introduced the Odatiwa Women Initiative’s Grant, a financial support program aimed at empowering 1,000 low-income women across the state.
The initiative was unveiled on Saturday during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome) in Akure. The event, themed “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Employment,” emphasized gender inclusivity and economic empowerment for women.
Commitment to Women’s Development
Speaking at the occasion, Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of women, particularly those in vulnerable economic positions. He stressed that providing financial support would enable women to thrive in business, leadership, and other sectors.
“The economic empowerment of women remains a top priority for this administration. When women are supported, families prosper, communities develop, and the society as a whole advances,” he stated.
The governor further assured that his government would continue to promote women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes at all levels.
“Ensuring that women have a strong voice in leadership is not just an aspiration but a necessity for a thriving society,” he added.
Appreciation for Women’s Contributions
Governor Aiyedatiwa took the opportunity to acknowledge the critical role women played in his electoral victory in the November 16, 2024, gubernatorial election. He pledged that his administration would prioritize policies and programs benefiting women and the girl-child.
“A new era has begun, and I sincerely appreciate the unwavering commitment of women in Ondo State. Our administration will continue to promote inclusivity in governance, as seen in recent appointments at both the state and local government levels,” he noted.
He called on stakeholders, institutions, and individuals to support initiatives that foster gender equality and economic independence for women.
Reactions from Key Stakeholders
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Dr. Seun Osamaye, commended the initiative, describing it as a major step toward closing the gender gap in the state. She noted that the government’s continued investment in women’s empowerment would boost entrepreneurship and leadership opportunities.
“This initiative is a game-changer, ensuring that women are not left behind in Ondo State’s development. By empowering women, we strengthen families, communities, and the state’s economy,” she remarked.
Former Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, also urged women to be bold in pursuing leadership and economic independence, encouraging them to break barriers and seize available opportunities.
Additionally, Temiloluwa Okin, a student of Fiwasewa Girls Grammar School, Akure, expressed gratitude to the governor for initiatives such as free student transportation and payment of WAEC fees, which have alleviated financial burdens on families.
Panel Discussions and Grant Distribution
The event featured a panel discussion on gender equality and inclusivity, where experts and policymakers addressed women’s leadership, access to economic opportunities, education, and strategies to combat gender-based discrimination and violence.
A highlight of the celebration was the official presentation of grants to selected beneficiaries, marking the commencement of the initiative.
Dignitaries present at the event included Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami, Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly Olamide Oladiji, Secretary to the State Government Taiwo Fasoranti, Head of Service Bayo Philip, Chief of Staff to the Governor Prince Segun Omojuwa, as well as traditional and religious leaders.
