KalimNews (With inputs from IPR, Gangtok, Sikkim) Siliguri, March 5, 2025: In a significant step towards improving infrastructure and public welfare, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay laid the foundation stone for a multi-facility complex at the Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) Terminus in Siliguri today. The complex, which will include a new bus terminus, a healthcare center, and a guest house, is expected to bring long-term benefits to travelers, government employees, and patients from Sikkim.
During his address, Chief Minister Tamang emphasized the historical importance of this development for the state, underlining that the new complex will house the SNT Office along with other government offices, streamlining administrative functions under one roof. He also pointed out that the Sikkim Health Care Centre, to be established within the complex, will provide essential medical services, particularly catering to Below Poverty Line (BPL) patients from Sikkim who often face challenges in accessing treatment outside the state.
“The complex will significantly enhance public services, transportation, and healthcare facilities for the people of Sikkim. It will serve as a hub for Sikkimese citizens traveling to Siliguri, providing them with much-needed facilities,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the healthcare center would be particularly beneficial for those who cannot afford private treatment. He further assured the people of Sikkim that the government is committed to the expansion of infrastructure and the welfare of its citizens.
The Chief Minister also took a moment to thank the Government of West Bengal, particularly Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Siliguri Municipal Corporation Mayor Gautam Deb for their invaluable cooperation in facilitating this crucial infrastructure project. “I thank Mamata Banerjee and Gautam Deb for their prompt response and support, which has made this project possible,” he stated.
The event began with a traditional Bhumi Puja, seeking divine blessings for the successful construction of the complex. The building plan was officially presented to the Chief Minister by the Building and Housing Department, detailing the scope and scale of the ambitious project. The new complex will feature a five-story office building and a ten-story healthcare center, ensuring ample space for various government offices and medical services.
With a total estimated cost of Rs 197 crore, the project will be constructed on a 2.1-acre plot. The complex will also house VIP suites for the Governor, Chief Minister, Ministers, MPs, and MLAs, along with a transport department office, home protocol office, and parking facilities. The Health Care Centre will include a dialysis unit, OPD rooms, and a dormitory for patients and attendants. The facility will also accommodate the Denzong Cooperative office and several other departments.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister reaffirmed his commitment to the holistic development of the state, highlighting the importance of this project in strengthening connectivity, enhancing passenger convenience, and expanding access to healthcare. “This facility will meet the growing demands of commuters and provide crucial medical support, as well as improved lodging options for Sikkimese citizens visiting Siliguri for healthcare needs,” he added.
The complex is expected to include automatic bus and taxi parking, a shopping complex, and will be completed within the next 24 months. Chief Minister Tamang assured that the healthcare center would cater to people from all sections of society, with special attention given to those who cannot afford to stay in private facilities. “This is not a permanent nursing home. It is a transit guest house designed to assist those in need of short-term accommodation while they receive medical care,” he clarified.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Speaker MN Sherpa, various Ministers, MLAs, Advisors, and dignitaries from both the Sikkim government and local authorities in Siliguri. This landmark project represents a major step towards improving the quality of life for the people of Sikkim and enhancing the state’s development trajectory.
