In the early hours of Monday, operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force raided the Lagos State House of Assembly, sealing off the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk.
The move follows a legal suit challenging the constitutionality of a sitting held on January 13, 2025, where Speaker Meranda was allegedly impeached. The application questions the legality of the assembly’s actions, arguing that the session occurred during a legislative recess without the Speaker formally reconvening the House or appointing someone to do so.
The legal suit contends that the proceedings violated constitutional and legislative rules, and it calls for an urgent hearing to determine the matter. The claimant seeks an expedited court ruling to ensure that legislative activities are not hindered by the ongoing uncertainty.
The application also requests a swift timeline for the defendants to respond, as well as for the claimant to reply on legal points, to speed up the resolution of the case. The court is urged to grant accelerated hearing in the interest of justice and to prevent any further delays in the legislative process.
Obasa, the applicant, assured that granting the request would not result in any harm or injustice to the parties involved.
