KalimNews, 14 February 2025, Kalimpong : The Kalimpong district administration marked the eighth foundation day of the district on Friday with a vibrant celebration. Formed in 2017, Kalimpong became the 21st district of West Bengal, with its headquarters in Kalimpong town.
Historically, Kalimpong was an important Indo-Tibetan trade hub during the British era. This rich history was showcased in a special exhibition organized for the occasion. The exhibition displayed rare historical photographs and exhibits highlighting the district’s cultural identity and its journey of development, particularly in areas like biodiversity.
A cultural program, featuring performances by talented local artists, captivated the audience with traditional songs and dances that reflected Kalimpong’s vibrant cultural heritage. The main event took place at the Kalimpong Town Hall, where a Tourist Hand Guidebook was also released, providing visitors with comprehensive information about the region.
The event was attended by District Magistrate Balasubramaniam T, Kalimpong Municipality Administrator Ravi Pradhan, Additional Superintendent of Police Purnima Sherpa, BDO Samirul Islam, and Sabhasads Sinora Namchu, Suman Gurung, Hemant Thulung, Kamal Subba, Bikas Rai and Birey Rai as well as different development and cultural Board representatives.
During the celebrations, District Magistrate Balasubramaniam emphasized the district’s ongoing growth and progress. He highlighted Kalimpong’s significant advancements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, particularly roads. “When Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the formation of this district eight years ago, it was a moment of hope and promise. Today, we are working relentlessly to fulfill that vision. Kalimpong has made remarkable progress, and the promotion of tourism and economic empowerment of the local people will remain top priorities in the coming years,” he said. He also stressed the need for united effort to build a better and more progressive Kalimpong, adding that sustainable, community-based tourism is key to improving livelihoods.
Situated at an altitude of 1300 meters on the eastern side of the Darjeeling Himalayas, Kalimpong district was formed on 14 February 2017 as the 21st district of West Bengal by splitting from Darjeeling district. It comprises Kalimpong Municipality with 23 wards and four community development blocks: Kalimpong I, Lava, Pedong, and Gorubathan, with 42 village panchayats. The district is renowned for its scenic beauty, from the majestic Himalayas to the pristine Dooars region, dense forests, enchanting valleys, and meadows. Kalimpong’s unique climate and biodiversity have made it one of the top tourist destinations in the Eastern Himalayas, particularly known for its diverse varieties of orchids, cacti, and ornamental plants.
On the occasion of the district’s formation day, several distinguished achievers in various fields, from district to national levels, were felicitated for their contributions.
