Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a fearless patriot, statesman, and one of Nigeria’s last remaining nationalists.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Atiku highlighted Adebanjo’s unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and democratic governance. He recalled the late Afenifere leader’s pivotal role in resisting military dictatorship and advocating for democratic rule in Nigeria.
“Pa Adebanjo dedicated his youth to fighting against colonial rule, spent his middle age battling military dictatorship, and devoted his later years to strengthening democracy, good governance, and the rule of law in Nigeria,” Atiku stated.
He praised the late elder statesman as a role model for civil rights activists, emphasizing his mentorship across generations and his relentless fight against injustice and oppression.
“His life serves as a guiding light for present and future advocates of good governance. He showed us how to be distinguished statesmen,” he added.
Atiku extended his condolences to the Adebanjo family, the government and people of Ogun State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss. He urged the family to find solace in the fact that their patriarch was a national hero and a pride to the Black race.
The former vice president also prayed for the peaceful repose of Adebanjo’s soul.
