KalimNews, February 10, 2025, Gangtok: Sikkimese filmmaker Tribeny Rai is making a significant mark on the global film scene with her debut feature film Shape of Momo, which has been selected for the prestigious Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) 2025. Rai, alongside her co-producer Kisley, will present her under-production Nepali film at the HKIFF Industry Project Market, an exclusive platform for work-in-progress projects that will run from March 17 to 19.
Shape of Momo is among the 15 projects selected for the market, a showcase that draws filmmakers from across Asia, blending established auteurs with emerging talents. This initiative is dedicated to providing essential support to filmmakers in the later stages of production, with a focus on helping secure post-production funding, distribution connections, and exposure to international film festival programmers. Previous participants of this program include notable films such as Village Rockstar by Reema Das, India’s official entry to the 91st Oscars, and Saurav Rai’s Guras.
Rai expressed her excitement about presenting Shape of Momo at the Hong Kong Film Festival, stating, “We are on the verge of completing the film and are really excited to present it at the market. We need post-production funds to complete our project, and hopefully, the Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) will provide us with the opportunity to network with investors and programmers.”
Hailing from Nandok, a scenic area near Ranipool in East Sikkim, Rai’s film has already captured significant attention both within India and internationally. The project, which tells the story of a woman determined to challenge the patriarchy that seeks to hold her down, has been shot extensively in the lush, culturally rich landscapes of Nandok, Sikkim. It is currently in its final production stages, heading toward post-production.
The film’s participation in the HKIFF Industry Project Market represents a crucial step in bringing Shape of Momo to the global stage. The project was also recently recognized at Film Bazaar 2024, where it was declared a joint winner of the Work-in-Progress Lab, alongside Ridham Janve’s Hunter’s Moon. This recognition was accompanied by substantial in-kind support from Prasad Lab and Nube Studio, helping to move the project closer to completion. The film has also caught the attention of international media, including the U.S.-based news outlet Variety, further elevating its profile.
Shape of Momo is a full-length Nepali feature that follows the empowering journey of a woman who defies the patriarchal structures imposed upon her. With its stunning visuals, shot in the heart of Sikkim, the film highlights the region’s landscapes and rich cultural identity.
