The Isoko and Urhobo communities, along with the broader Delta State educational and Christian circles, are mourning the passing of Deaconess (Mrs.) Rebecca Edjeren, a pioneering female educator and dedicated Christian leader who devoted her life to teaching and faith-based service.
A statement from her family confirmed that she passed away at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital on January 27, 2025, at the remarkable age of 101.
Born on July 2, 1923, in Ivrogbo-Irri, Isoko South Local Government Area, Rebecca Edjeren grew up in a home that valued education and Christian principles.
Her parents, David and Esther Ogbo, instilled in her the importance of learning at a time when female education was uncommon. She defied societal expectations and attended the prestigious Teacher-Training College at Ebu-Owerri, graduating in 1943 and setting the foundation for a distinguished career in education.
Her marriage to James Edjeren, a renowned Urhobo educator from Otokutu, Ughelli South LGA, further strengthened her commitment to shaping young minds.
Over a 35-year career, she taught in various primary schools across Warri, Enugu, Onitsha, Ughelli, Iluelogbo (Owhelogbo), Emevor, Uro, and Oleh, culminating her service at Isoko Central School (ICS).
Following her retirement, she transitioned into entrepreneurship, becoming a food contractor for the emerging University of Benin.
Her time in Benin City also deepened her spiritual journey. She became a committed member of Church of God Mission International under Archbishop Benson Idahosa, where she served as a deaconess and matron at the Word of Faith Group of Schools.
Her faith-driven mission extended beyond Nigeria, as she participated in international evangelistic missions through the Christian Women International Fellowship (CWIFI). Even in her later years, she remained an active choir member at Faith Arena, Benin City.
Rebecca Edjeren leaves behind a distinguished family legacy. Her eight children, who have made remarkable contributions in their respective fields, include veteran broadcaster and public relations expert Ray Austin Edjeren, Professeur Emery Edjeren, retired civil servant Ms. Edna Edjeren, culinary expert Elder Florence Enejeta Mosheshe (popularly known as Flora), Dr. Mrs. Ufuoma Lamikanra (also known as Gladys), Associate Professor Felix Edjeren, veteran journalist and media executive Ignatius Ruke Edjeren, and ace broadcaster Israel Edjeren.
Her legacy extends to her 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, among whom are internationally recognized individuals such as Dr. Oluwatomi Lamikanra and renowned internet preacher Joy Edjeren.
Rebecca Edjeren’s life—marked by dedication to education, entrepreneurship, and Christian ministry—remains an inspiration for generations of women in Isoko, Urhobo, and beyond.
