At 68 years old, Gurung, hailing from Soreng in Sikkim, has dedicated over six decades to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Sikkim, particularly its Nepali folk music and dance traditions.
A versatile artist, Naren Gurung’s tireless efforts have extended beyond the Nepali community as he has also played a crucial role in reviving the Bhutia and Lepcha traditions. His performances at various national and international festivals have cemented his reputation as a leading guardian of Sikkim’s cultural legacy. Over the years, Gurung has not only been a consistent performer on radio and television but has also made a significant mark as a Bhajan singer with a repertoire of over 30 songs to his name.
In addition to his performance career, Gurung has made an indelible impact as a mentor to younger generations of artists. His extensive work in releasing numerous audiocassettes and promoting the folk traditions has ensured their continued vibrancy and popularity across the region. His passion for Sikkimese folk music has also led him to represent the state on prominent national and international platforms, including the Sanjari Concert and IGNCA, while performing in countries like the USA, the UK, and Kenya.
