Former Vice President of Nigeria and prominent opposition leader, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, describing it as the loss of a monumental figure in Nigeria’s history.
In a heartfelt condolence message on Friday, Atiku paid tribute to the late General Useni, recalling his distinguished service as a soldier, astute public administrator, and a champion of peace.
Atiku highlighted the late General’s impressive career, which included roles as Nigeria’s former Minister of Transport and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Useni was also known for his political activism and his commitment to conflict mediation and promoting harmony.
Atiku, in his message, fondly referred to Useni as “Merry Jerryman,” a term that captured his lighthearted and amiable nature, adding that Useni was famous for his ever-smiling persona.
“The great deeds of General Useni towards nation-building are too tangible and visible to be obliterated in a jiffy,” Atiku remarked.
The Waziri of Adamawa also extended condolences to the military, with which Useni served with distinction, and to the people of Plateau State, where the late General represented as a senator.
Atiku prayed for strength and comfort for both Useni’s immediate family and his extended family during this time of grief.
“May his patriotic soul blissfully rest in eternity while we pray for strength and comfort for his nuclear and extended families to pull through this moment of bereavement and grief,” Atiku said.
