MP, 22 Jan 2025, BALURGHAT: A Special POCSO Court in South Dinajpur on Tuesday found an accused guilty of sexually assaulting a five-year-old student at a private English-medium school in Balurghat on December 7, 2016.
The convict, found guilty under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the POCSO Act, was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court presided over by Judge Sharanya Sen Prasad also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on convict Santosh Kumar Banik.
Public Prosecutor Ritabrata Chakraborty stated: “The accused, an employee of the English-medium school in Balurghat, was charged with sexually assaulting a five-year-old child.
After the complaint was filed, police initiated an investigation and submitted a chargesheet. The court convicted the accused on Tuesday and on Wednesday, the judge sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.”
In case of non-payment of the fine, an additional six months of simple imprisonment would be served, as per the judgment.
