Just eight days after receiving a pardon from Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, a former inmate, Sunday Omisakin, has been sent back to the Ilesa Correctional Facility over allegations of theft and burglary.
Omisakin, whose name appeared as number 8 on the governor’s list of pardoned inmates on December 26, 2024, was initially released for what was considered a minor offence. However, on January 3, 2025, he was arrested for allegedly breaking into a home in Osogbo and stealing a plasma television valued at N600,000.
During his arraignment at the Osun State Magistrate Court in Osogbo, presided over by Magistrate Adekanmi Adeyeba, the police prosecutor, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, stated, “On January 3, 2025, at approximately 12:00 p.m., at Al-Medinat Area, Iludun, Osogbo, Omisakin unlawfully entered the residence of Shittu Damilare and took a plasma television worth N600,000.”
Omisakin pleaded not guilty to the charges, while his counsel, Najite Okobe, requested bail under liberal terms. However, the prosecutor objected, pointing out that the accused had only recently been pardoned and had not completed his previous sentence.
Magistrate Adeyeba denied the bail application, ordering Omisakin’s remand in the Ilesa Correctional Facility. The matter has been adjourned until February 2025 for further proceedings.
The alleged crimes contravene sections 411(1)(2), 363, and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
