Radhamadhab Saha, MP, 19 Jan 2025, Raiganj: In a significant breakthrough, police have arrested one Seikh Hajrat in connection with the undertrial escape case in Panjipara of North Dinajpur district.
Hajrat was apprehended on Saturday from Purba Goldia village under Belan Gram Panchayat of the Goalpokhar Police Station area. He was produced before the Islampur Sub-Divisional Court the same day and has been remanded to 10 days of police custody.
Police sources revealed that Hajrat was a key accomplice in aiding Sajjak Alam’s escape from custody. Alam had escaped from a prison van on Wednesday at Ekarchala after opening fire on police officers, injuring two of them. Investigations revealed that one Abdul Hussain supplied firearms to Alam through Hajrat.
The breakthrough came on Thursday when police received a tip-off about Hussain staying at Hajrat’s residence. A raid was conducted, leading to Hajrat’s arrest. Both Hajrat and Abdul were allegedly instrumental in orchestrating Alam’s escape. On Saturday morning, Alam was killed in a police encounter at Kichaktoal.
His post-mortem was conducted at Raiganj Medical College and Hospital on Sunday morning. Sajjak, who was accused of murdering a poultry trader, Subesh Das, in Karandighi in 2019, had been a source of terror in the area. His escape from custody had left Das’s family, residing in Khikirtola, living in fear. F
ollowing Alam’s death in the encounter, the family expressed relief. Bhanu Das, the widow of the slain trader, remarked: “Sajjak was a notorious criminal. His death has brought us relief. We salute the police for their action.”
Superintendent of Police, Islampur Police District, Jobby Thomas, confirmed Hajrat’s arrest and stated: “Hajrat has been taken into police custody and is being interrogated. We are continuing combing operations to locate Abdul Hussain, who is suspected to be hiding near the India-Bangladesh border.” He declined to divulge further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
