Nearly a month after the tragic stampede at the Principal of Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, the Oyo State government has filed 18 counts of murder against Naomi Silekunola, the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, and several others.
The charges, which include conspiracy to commit murder and manslaughter, were filed on January 10, 2025, in a suit registered as I/05C/2025. Silekunola, along with Oriyomi Hamzat, the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station, and Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of the school, are accused of being involved in the deadly stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children on December 18, 2024.
The state government has listed the former queen and other individuals as defendants, accusing them of criminal negligence and conspiracy to commit offenses, punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
