Popular Nigerian TikToker, Olumide Ogunsanwo, known as Seaking, has shared a harrowing experience from his time in Kirikiri prison, shedding light on the plight of long-term inmates.
In a video posted online, Seaking expressed shock at the conditions in the prison, highlighting that it is predominantly filled with underprivileged individuals who lack the financial means to secure proper legal representation.
As reported by Vanguard, one particular case stood out to him—a pair of inmates who have been incarcerated since 1999 over a stolen generator. According to Seaking, one of the inmates was accused of stealing the generator, while the other was arrested for unknowingly purchasing the stolen item.
Recounting the incident, he said in Pidgin English, “There is someone inside Kirikiri that is said to have stolen generator, him and the person he sold generator to, two of them are inside Kirikiri since 1999, calculate the years.”
Seaking questioned the justice system, expressing disbelief that the buyer of the stolen generator has remained in prison for 26 years alongside the alleged thief. “Why is it that the person who used his money to buy the stolen generator is in prison since 1999?” he asked.
The TikToker also lamented the systemic inequality reflected in the prison system, stating, “Poor Nigerians are who are in Kirikiri. When I entered there, I saw only poor and voiceless people there.”
Seaking’s account has sparked conversations about the state of the Nigerian justice system and the need for urgent reforms to address the plight of indigent prisoners.
