The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has named 130 individuals as special assistants, marking the second such round of appointments within half a year.
Ihunwo made the announcement on Wednesday through a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the inclusion of individuals such as Helen Nyekwere, Josephine Wogu, Daisy Worgu, Wagwu Hilda, Ogbonna Stella, Goodness Ogbonna, and Grace Amadi.
“I extend my congratulations to all appointees and urge them to diligently serve the interests of Obio/Akpor Local Government. These appointments take immediate effect,” the chairman wrote.
The latest announcement follows Ihunwo’s earlier appointment of 100 special assistants in July 2024, during his time as caretaker committee chairman of the council.
Known as a strong supporter of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Ihunwo has been at the center of political controversies. Notably, in October, he facilitated the removal of former Governor Nyesom Wike’s name from the council secretariat’s administrative block.
Wike, who is from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor LGA and now serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been engaged in an intense political rivalry with Governor Fubara, further fueling the state’s ongoing power tussle.
