Three Police officers, Inspectors Umumwangho Etinosa, Olaoye Michael and Adura Olawale, had a nasty experience in Lagos State while performing their lawful duty as they attempted to apprehend a driver on the highway.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the driver, Oladimeji Tosin stripped himself, beat them mercilessly at the bus stop and inflicted injury on the officers in the process.
The incident happened at Opeki Bus-Stop, Ipaja, Lagos, where the victims went to perform their lawful duty.
The 31-year old suspect, Tosin, has been arrested and charged before Ejigbo Magistrate Court for conduct likely to cause breach of public peace and assault under the Criminal Laws of the State.
According to the Police, the victims went to the bus stop to perform their lawful duty when they accosted the driver, who resisted arrest and alleged them of attempting to extort him without committing any offence.
The victims later mobilized other officers, arrested and detained him at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct. He was found culpable after interrogation and charged before the Court for the alleged offence.
The charges read:
COUNT 1: “That you, Oladimeji Tosin, on the 1st December, 2024 at about 14:35hrs at Opeki Bus-Stop, Ipaja, Lagos in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a public place in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by trying to resist an arrest and seriously assaulted Inspectors Umumwangho Etinosa, Olaoye Michael and Adura Olawale, and contravened Section 168(d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT II:”That you, Oladimeji Tosin on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did threaten violence by annoying the officer of Ipaja Police Station on a stop and search duty at Opeki Bus-Stop by causing unpalatable scene by pulling off your trouser and shirt in the public thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 56 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT III:”That you, Oladimeji Tosin on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did resist the officers while engaged in the discharge of their lawful duty and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 117 (1) (2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT IV:”That you, Oladimeji Tosin on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully assault one Inspector Umumwangho Etinosa, by using your handset to hit and cause injury on his head and gave him a human bite on his left hand and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 174 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT V:”That you, Oladimeji Tosin on the same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault one Inspector Olaoye Michael by biting his right hand while trying to perform his lawful duty, contrary to the provisions of the criminal law of Lagos State.”
COUNT VI: That you, Oladimeji Tosin, on the same date, place in the aforesaid Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault one Adura Olawale ‘M’ by using Ipala Police station gate to cause injury on his forehead and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 174 of the Criminal laws of Lagos steder of Nigeria, 2015.”
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate Mrs. A.K. Dosumu-Uthman, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned till 17th December, 2024, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
