The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim has enjoined the corps members to prepare for the challenges that lies ahead of them as they finish the three weeks orientation course.
General Ibrahim disclosed this during the Terminal Parade/Closing Ceremony for the 2022 Batch ‘A’ (Stream II) corps members deployed to Ondo, the Sunshine State.
The Director General who was represented at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani said that the corps members should brace up for the tasks of nation-building as the entire citizenry looks forward to their roles in advancing the unity and development of the country.
“As you get set to report to your Places of Primary Assignment, I wish to stress the need for you to be diligent in the performance of your duties and to remain patriotic, hardworking and resilient as demonstrated during the orientation exercise”.
“I also urge you to integrate into your host communities through learning of their languages and cultures. Furthermore, you should devote time to identify the felt needs of the communities, and initiate personal and group Community Development Service projects that will uplift their living standards”.
He assured the corps members that their welfare and security are topmost on the priority list of the Scheme and also disclosed that NYSC has sustained relationships with security agencies and other stakeholders with the view of not only ensuring their safety, but also making the essential provisions that will enable them have a fulfilling service year.
“However, we expect you to play your own part by being security conscious at all times. You must avoid risky engagements such as staying out late at night, attendance of late night parties, visitation of dangerous places, and acceptance of car ride from strangers”.
The two star General declared that social vices such as drug abuse and trafficking, cybercrime and advanced-fee-fraud would not be condoned and warned that anyone caught will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the NYSC Bye-Laws.
The erudite scholar and historian, who is equally a Fellow, Nigerian Army Resource Centre (FNARC) enjoined the corps members to be law-abiding at all times, and be good ambassadors of the NYSC and their families, and strongly advised them to use social media for positive purposes instead of using it for promotion of peddling rumours, fake news, hatred as well as ethnic jingoism.
Ibrahim did not fail to encourage corps members to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme which has been carefully designed to equip them for self-employment and wealth creation.
“The level of enthusiasm you demonstrated during the vocational and entrepreneurial training conducted in the camp is commendable. You are further encouraged to build on the skills acquired by availing yourselves of opportunities for post-camp training” he said.
The colourful event had recognition of the three Corps Camp Directors for their sterling leadership abilities while a personnel of Citizenship and Leadership Development (Man ‘O’ War) as well as two NYSC staff received Letters of Commendation for their ingenuity and commitment to duty.
The three weeks orientation course for the 1765 registered corps members made up of 984 males and 781 females played host to distinguished and eminent personalities such as the NYSC Director General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, an Associate Professor; Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, Brigadier General Muktar Adamu and His Royal Majesty Oba Adeleke Adefemi Adegbite-Adedoyin, the Owa-Ale Adimula of Ikareland.
